In the post-election public discourse, three factors emerged to explain this victory, the INC's focus on welfare schemes (the 'guarantees'), a united leadership under D.K. Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah and an effective counter-narrative to the BJP's Hindutva plank. The BJP's central leadership was quick to identify the key factor behind Congress's victory, the united leadership of Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah. Hence, it was important for the BJP to fan the story of discord.

But such stories were not convincing enough to engineer the defection of at least 24 Congress MLAs, which was required to topple the government, especially against a man like Shivakumar, who is a master at this game, capable of upsetting the BJP on its own turf. The emergence of Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah also signified Congress's strong bench.
