Viral gambar Matahari ada tompok hitam besar ini. Saiznya lebih kurang 800,000 km. Kalau nak faham besarnya tompok ini, ia boleh memuatkan 60 buah planet Bumi.

Tompok ini sebenarnya Lohong Coronal (Coronal Hole). Walaupun namanya lohong, ia tak berlubang pun sebenarnya. Ia cuma bertompok hitam. Warna hitam itu menandakan suhu dan ketumpatannya lebih rendah berbanding kawasan Matahari lain.

Lohong ini terbentuk disebabkan medan magnet matahari menjulur keluar ke arah sistem suria. Angin solar (solar wind) yang keluar daripada lohong ini berganda lebih laju daripada biasa. Impaknya kepada Bumi boleh ganggu sistem telekomunikasi di Bumi. Tapi jangan panik, ia bukanlah gangguan yang serius.

Lohong Coronal bukan sesuatu yang ganjil. Ia boleh terbentuk pada bila-bila masa. Cuma lebih kerap terjadi pada kitaran suria minima yang terjadi sekitar 11 tahun sekali.
