The heat in the room was stifling, but the coldness inside me was worse. Me: “There’s $18,500 missing from my account.”

Bank Employee: “Let me pull up your account.”

She typed for a few seconds.

Bank Employee: “I see the transaction.”

Me: “What transaction?”

Bank Employee: “The money was transferred out yesterday.”

Me: “By who?”

She looked at the screen again.

Bank Employee: “The transfer was authorized through your online banking.”

Me: “That’s impossible.”

Bank Employee: “Do you have your phone with you?”

Me: “Yes.”

Bank Employee: “Is your banking app still working?”

I opened it.

My balance was almost empty.

Me: “So someone stole my money?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

Bank Employee: “There’s something else you need to know.”

But if you could snap your fingers and change everything around you, would you really be happier?

Maybe the problem isn’t always where you are. Sometimes, you have to learn to appreciate where you are while still working toward where you want to be.

I didn’t know what to say. I already liked him. I had since the first night, before Marcus ever touched his arm.

I said nothing. I went home.

A year and a half passed.

Then a man walked into the bar I work at and ordered whiskey like he already knew the menu.

New jaw. Different hair. Same eyes.

He looked at me and smiled like it hurt.

“You remember me?”

I almost dropped the glass.

“Eli?”

“Not anymore.”

He told me everything in the back alley. The fake relationship. The stolen catalog. The manager who helped Marcus bury him.

“I came back for them,” he said. “Not for you.”
