OFI re-wilding team planting tree seedlings yesterday. We have planted almost half a million trees since 2017 including student plantings done on our Orangutan Campaign. Our re-wilding team consists of 7 local people. We were basically on hiatus for 2 years during peak Covid.
As soon as wild adult male #orangutan Ahad is out of the transport cage, he jumps from the cage & heads for the trees through the vegetation. Our photographer blinked& Ahad was gone! What a journey it's been! From near-death in a palmoil plantation to back home in the wild.
Orangutan Foundation International (@OFIOrangutan ) rangers and Forestry Department officers (@bksdakalteng & @tanjungputingNP) take the anesthetized recovered wild adult male #orangutan to his transport cage. It is mid-April 2022. He is on his way home to the great forest!
Wounded male #orangutan Ahad who came into OFI's Care Center,Central Borneo, badly injured December 2019 has fully recovered but his face displays scars of healed cuts.He is as magnificent as he once was before being injured in a #palmoil plantation.Time for return to the wild!

“If we are studying a species in the wild and that species is on the verge of extinction, then I don't understand how anybody can say that it is more important to study that species rather than trying to save it.” - @DrBirute
Forests are being set ablaze to make way for agriculture, especially for #palmoil plantations. This year, the #forestfires are particularly severe due to drier-than-usual conditions.

#orangutan rehabilitation takes years of commitment and #OFI has saved thousands of orangutans. I prefer to make my judgements based on facts and not misleading critics.
I support #TanjungPutingNationalPark, and think others should too. Organic eco-tourism is good for local people and growing numbers of visitors provide opportunity for conciencious management.
Today, and every day, we must fight for endangered species. Contact your representatives and let them know that we must stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Read more: https://t.co/ALMy3bemky #ESA#EndangeredSpeciesAct
#Deforestation and forest degradation account for 10% of global #greenhousegas emissions. At @RnfrstAlliance, we believe it's of critical importance to come together, as a global community, to reforest degraded lands and #conserve the #forests that remain. https://t.co/EZxsyoJkKK
