Rep. Brian Mast, a former volunteer with the Israeli Defense Forces, is reportedly under consideration to replace Dan Driscoll as Secretary of the Army.

That raises a serious question: should anyone who has participated in another country’s military operations be eligible to serve in Congress, let alone lead the U.S. Army?

Supporters of Mast dismiss criticism as antisemitism. But if a former volunteer for any other foreign military were being considered for this role, would Washington treat it the same way? Why does Israel receive special consideration?

At a moment when concerns over Israeli influence in American politics are at a high, this possible appointment is only deepening public distrust.
