Some stories sound too extraordinary to be true.

Yet the name of Jaswant Singh Rawat continues to inspire generations because courage sometimes exceeds imagination.

It was 1962.

The mountains of NEFA (now Arunachal Pradesh) had become a battlefield.

Chinese forces were advancing in overwhelming numbers.

Indian positions were under immense pressure.

And amid the chaos stood a young rifleman from the Garhwal Rifles.

When the situation became critical and troops were ordered to fall back, Jaswant Singh Rawat reportedly stayed behind near Nuranang.

Not because he expected victory.

Not because he had reinforcements.

But because someone had to hold the line.

For nearly 72 hours, he continued to resist.

Moving between firing positions.

Creating the impression that an entire unit was still defending the post.

Refusing to let the enemy know how alone he truly was.

According to popular accounts, he was assisted by two brave Monpa girls, Sela and Nura, who helped carry supplies and support the resistance.

Outnumbered.

Surrounded.

Cut off.

Yet unshaken.

Every hour he held that position bought precious time for fellow soldiers and delayed the enemy's advance.

And that is what makes his story so powerful.

Heroism is not the absence of fear.

It is standing firm despite it.

Today, at the Jaswant Garh War Memorial, his memory is honored in a unique way.

His room is maintained.

His uniform is cared for.

His presence is remembered as though he is still serving.

Because some soldiers leave behind more than memories.

They leave behind a standard of courage that inspires a nation.

Jaswant Singh Rawat did not merely defend a post.

He became a symbol of duty, sacrifice, and unwavering love for India. 🇮🇳❤️

When the Government of India announced the Padma Shri for Dr. Tapan Kumar Lahiri,
the protocol required him to travel to Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi to receive the honor from the President.

​However, Dr. Lahiri was hesitant to go. His reasoning was simple: "If I go to Delhi, who will look after my patients in the OPD?" For him, a day away from the hospital wasn't a holiday; it was a day his patients—many of whom traveled from Bihar and rural UP—would go untreated.

Finally he did go given the prestige associated with the event.

Who is Dr Tapan Lahiri?

Dr. Tapan Kumar Lahiri is a legendary Indian cardiothoracic surgeon and professor commonly referred to as the "Saint of BHU". Dr. Lahiri has done FRCS and MCh and working in BHU.

​Dr. Lahiri’s commitment to the poor is extraordinary.

In 1994, when his salary (including allowances) exceeded ₹1 lakh, he stopped taking it entirely, directing the university to use the funds for the treatment of underprivileged patients.

After retiring in 2003, he continued this practice with his pension. He keeps only enough to cover two simple meals a day and donates the remainder to the BHU patient fund.

Even in his 80s, he has been known to walk to the hospital at 6:00 AM daily, carrying a simple bag and a black umbrella, to check on his patients.
