Take how the system handles NPCs for example. It's not just about a bunch of random NPCs popping in. The engine is constantly calculating your distance to every person in the street to swap how they act. Up close, they're "real NPCs" who react to what you're doing but as you get further away, their behavior merges into one giant, simplified group to save performance.
