Wrong team favored alert 🚨
22nd ranked Arizona State (37-19) takes on 18th ranked Ole Miss (36-21). Ole Miss is the higher ranked team and they play in a tougher conference, but in this game, Arizona State holds the advantages.
Let's start on the mound, as Hunter Elliott will toe the rubber for Ole Miss and Cole Carlon will get the ball for Arizona State.
Carlon has had an excellent year, pitching to a 3.51 ERA, but you could make the argument he's gotten unlucky.
His 1.83 SIERA is rivaled by only the best starters in college baseball; he's downright disgusting.
He's striking out north of 14 batters per nine innings, and with his wipeout stuff, he's set up for a nice outing against Ole Miss.
The Rebels have a really solid offense, .860 OPS, 104 wRC+, and we have to give them credit for facing one of the hardest schedules in the country.
However, their lineup features a lot of swing and miss, rocking a strikeout rate north of 26%. Facing off against Carlon puts them in a less than ideal spot.
Hunter Eliott is better than his 5.07 ERA would indicate, posting a well above average 3.05 SIERA. However, he does have a walk problem, and if he's giving out free passes against this offense, good luck.
Arizona State ranks seventh nationally in wRC+ at 116, led by Landon Hairston who will be a finalist for the Golden Spikes award.
They rank seventh in OPS at .960, fifth in batting average at .320, and they've hit the tenth most home runs with 108. It's a suffocating offense that can hang runs on any staff in the country.
Ole Miss does have an exceptional pitching staff, ranking third in SIERA in the entire country.
However, when push comes to shove in this tournament, I back the better offense, especially when I believe I have the starting pitching advantage.
When both teams have been asked to step up in class, Ole Miss went 14-17 against Quad 1 opponents while ASU went 7-9.
Ole Miss played more great teams but didn't exactly succeed in them. Ole Miss has the better overall staff, but not the better starter, and I'm definitely taking ASU's lineup.
All of that lines up to make ASU the slight favorite, so at +124, I'm in.
Pick: Arizona State ML (+124)
