Sen. Tillis thanking Senate staff, police for their actions on Jan. 6
"They breached this building. And I've got tell you as the last member who left this chamber, because I was standing right there and so angry, because I didn't want to leave"
"We had someone die on the House side ... sadly she lost her life, but she put herself in that situation, like everybody else that breached this building"
Rep Jared Moskowitz, D-FL, when asked to comment on shutdown: “sorry I burned my
mouth on the coffee in (the meeting). If I was a senator I’d have a private cause of action.”
“That’s a nonstarter," Sen. John Thune, R-S.D. “The Obamacare extension is the negotiation. That’s what we’re going to negotiate once the government opens up. But you know, a one year extension along the lines of what they’re suggesting… that doesn’t get close.”
Democrats release new proposal for reopning the government. A CR with a one year ACA subsidy extension. GOP says it's dead on arrival. Here's the quotes -
“Democrats would like to see an end to this shutdown, and we want to respect Leader [John] Thune’s desire not to negotiate on ACA until after the government reopens,” Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
“I'm a business guy. You change this, and every two or four years, you could have massive swings and tax policy, regulatory policy,” Sen. Tillis said. “People pay a premium to invest in the United States because we have certainty. We are thoughtful.
Senate Republicans are more open to the nuclear option for reopening the government. Here are some of the interesting quotes @StraightArrow__ got today on Capitol Hill:
“I think there may be a role to look at things like appropriations bills or continuing resolutions so we can at least reopen the government. Because we can't tolerate the continued shutdown caused by Senator Schumer and Democrats,” Sen. John Cornyn said.
@SenAlexPadilla just walked up to the Ohio Clock podium to make an unexpected announcement- he is not running for California Governor. He made the announcement standing by his wife and says he wants to stay in the fight in DC.
I spoke with Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger about @elonmusk announcement that he's creating Grokipedia, a competitor to Wikipedia. Here's what he said - https://t.co/ST9YIdOboR
D.C. during the government shutdown feels different: quieter, slower, almost paused. Streets near federal buildings are unusually empty, and the usual rhythm of the city has softened.
For many government employees, this means being furloughed or working without pay. From national parks to public services, the ripple effects go beyond politics and touch everyday lives.
