I didn't lose a dollar on the last rug, BunnyButton. but still want to say something and maybe even give a solution...
Roughly $80,000 profit gone. Clean execution, clean exit. And when it was over, the Abstract community collectively tipped their hats, said "well played," "Expected in web3" and moved on.
Aftermath was basically a round of applause for a job well done.
I understand the culture. In crypto, especially on a newer chain like Abstract, there's a tradition of playing Ponzi games and gamble with eyes wide open. You know the odds, you take the shot. Sometimes it pays. This time it didn't for most people. That's the game.
But I'm not okay with what comes after the shrug.
We've normalized this. And that normalization is exactly the product scammers are buying when they enter this space.
Every time we respond to a rug with "gg, enjoy your vacation," we send a clear signal to everyone watching: scam here, nothing will happen to you. No investigation. No legal exposure. No consequences. Just pack up and move to the next chain, the next community, the next $80K.
Serious people see that signal too. Not just scammers. Builders deciding which chain to build on. Investors deciding whether Web3 is worth their time. They look at how a community responds to getting robbed, and they draw their conclusions. When the conclusion is "they laughed it off," they leave. And honestly, they should.
We keep asking why institutional money won't come in. We keep asking why mainstream investors don't take crypto seriously. Part of the answer is this. Right here. A culture that celebrates a clean exit over accountability.
So here's a concrete idea.
What if the Abstract community, together with the Abstract team, built a response fund? Not a vague pledge of future action. An actual funded structure with a clear mandate: when a scammer walks away with serious money on this chain, the fund activates.
OSINT investigators to trace wallets and map identities. White hat hackers to follow the on-chain trail. Digital forensics where needed. A lawyer on retainer to take a real case to a real court when the evidence is strong enough.
BunnyButton alone took $80,000. That's enough to seed a bounty program that makes scamming on Abstract a genuinely risky calculation. Not just morally wrong, not just bad for the ecosystem, but personally dangerous for the person doing it. "Will Abstract come after me?" should be a real question every potential scammer has to sit with before they start.
Would it work every time? No. Would it recover every stolen dollar? No. But it would change the math. And changing the math is the whole point.
Maybe I'm an idealist.
I don't know if something like this is feasible, or whether the community would even want it. Maybe the prevailing view is that this is just the cost of doing business in an unregulated space, and anyone who doesn't like it can go back to TradFi.
But I'm angry. And when I stop and think about it, I think more of us should be. Not at BunnyButton specifically. They played the game exactly as it's currently set up. The rules say: steal cleanly, move fast, and the community will applaud you on the way out.
I want different rules. And I think Abstract is exactly the kind of community that could build them, if it decided to.
Is this worth building, or am I just shouting into the void? @AbstractChain@LucaNetz we know you already spend $40M on building this chain and making it better, even giving it a chance to become revolutionary in the future. Financing a small fund for this type of bounty or something similar would IMO send a strong message about Abstract and what all of us want it to become!
