What really got me was how the movie slowly pulled someone with zero background knowledge into the emotions and pressures of that era—it was such an incredible feeling. Halfway through I was still wondering why it had won an Oscar, but by the ending everything clicked and I completely understood. The only part that still feels strange to me is the subplot where Knox pursues Chris. That kind of persistence comes across pretty oddly through our cultural lens.
