Supersonic is back, baby!
On January 28th, Geppetto broke the sound barrier aboard the first privately-developed supersonic jet.
And today…@realDonaldTrump broke the sound barrier…permanently!
In 1973, a ban was placed on supersonic flight over the US. It was supposed to protect the public from sonic booms. But instead it banned innovation. The result crippled progress for half a century. The trend of ever-increasing flight speeds ground to a halt.
However, today we can celebrate–quiet supersonic flight is allowed!
The supersonic race is on and a new era of commercial flight can begin. Unleashed, my bet is very much on 🇺🇸(and @boomsupersonic).
Please join me in thanking @realDonaldTrump and @USDOT@SecDuffy for their leadership—as well as @SenTedBuddNC and @RepTroyNehls for introducing the bipartisan SAM act. And to the team @FAANews for leading us in the next steps for boomless flight!
Make America Supersonic!!!
XB-1 is safely back on the ground with a good Flight Ten and a new top speed. So that's it for 2024, folks. Supersonic is just a couple flights away early next year.
More stats to come later today after team debriefs... next up for me today - Overture technical review.
I invested more in Boom than I've ever invested in a startup before. But this company is important for America. They'll also make a huge amount of money if they succeed. No one else is anywhere near having a supersonic airliner.
XB-1 flight 5 overview:
✅New max speed: Mach 0.69 (324 KIAS)
✅Flutter excitation system (FES) test at Mach 0.6
✅Handling quality, flutter, and pacer checks at higher speeds
✅Landing gear up right after takeoff

XB-1 successfully completed its 4th–and fastest–test flight today. Here’s a view from the T-38 chase plane keeping up with XB-1, which reached a max speed of Mach 0.617 (313 KIAS)–more than halfway to breaking the sound barrier at Mach 1.

XB-1 Flight Four ✅
Very successful flight this morning. Airplane performed great, with a new top speed of Mach 0.6 and 2.5G maneuvers.
Only lowlight: FES didn’t cooperate for M0.6 test point. So we’re pulling it out and shipping to vendor. Maybe back in the air in 3-4 weeks.
XB-1 flight 3 completed:
✅Reached max pitch and yaw attitudes that we expect to see in flight
✅Environmental control system (ECS) tested
✅Landing gear retracted and extended at higher speeds
✅Stability augmentation system check
✅Max altitude: 15,000 ft. Max speed: 232kts
