Because we have been told multiple times that while you are next to unstoppable in the avatar state it is also when you are most vulnerable. Aang also died in the avatar state and was only lucky to be saved.

@AniNewsAndFacts This really is so disappointing cause the adaptation was so bad, the fight between kaspian and art. dialogue and animation was not it. Actually so sad cause the story is actually so good and I legit get more animation in the comic than the animation itself.
