One of the hardest truths many editors face is this: there are countless editors who are objectively less “skilled,” yet they have twice the clients and charge twice as much.

Why?

Because the average viewer doesn’t care about your super intricate transition, or your perfectly dialed cc, or the subtle details in your animations. Those things are impressive, but they’re not truly what increases results.

What most viewers do care about is pace, clarity, and engagement. They want content that holds their attention and communicates quickly. Editors who understand this, and deliver exactly what the audience responds to, even at a basic level, often outperform those who focus primarily on artistry.

Skill matters. Craft matters. But understanding your audience and the purpose of the content matters more.

If your goal is to grow, attract clients, and increase your rates, don’t just ask, “How can I make this look better?”
