Banh cuon is a traditional Vietnamese dish that is easily mistaken with its cousin banh uot (steamed thin rice cake) because their toppings are always the same. To make banh cuon, a thin noodle sheet is steamed on a thin layer of fabric placed over a pot of boiling water. The sheets are then filled with minced pork and served with cha lua (Vietnamese pork bologna), fried rice powder cake, nem chua (fermented pork roll) and a sweet dipping fish sauce. The dish ranges from VND25,000-VND50,000 ($1.05-$2.11) per serving. World-famous chefs and travel bloggers have also praised banh cuon in the past. Prominent U.S. restaurant critic Tejal Rao praised banh cuon in the New York Times in 2019, calling it a must on any culinary journey to Vietnam. Controversial British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay also said he’d fallen in love with the dish. In March, Culinary Journeys, a food program that airs monthly on CNN International, included chuoi nuong (Vietnam’s grilled bananas) on its list of best desserts in the world.

There were 155 traffic accidents during the three-day New Year holiday, 152 of them on roads, in which 56 people were killed and 131 others were injured. The Traffic Police Department said compared to 2023, also a three-day holiday, the number of accidents increased by 72 and the number of deaths and injuries by six and 80. Of the casualties, 54 deaths and 130 injuries occurred on roads, and the rest on the railroad. During the three days of holidays starting last Saturday, the traffic police across the country hauled up more than 25,500 people for violations and fined them more than VND58 billion (US$2.38 million). They also impounded 320 cars and 9,500 motorcycles, and revoked the driving licenses of more than 5,200 people. Drunk driving accounted for 7,500 cases and speeding for more than 5,100.

The upcoming clash between Vietnamese boxer Tran Van Thao and China’s Gui Ming Li has been one of the top 10 most anticipated bouts scheduled for the WBO’s “War in Paradise” on Jan. 13. The WBO title match will be held in Incheon, South Korea. Among the 20 names competing at the event are three Vietnamese boxers, namely reigning IBA Bantamweight World Champion Thao in the men’s 55kg category, Nguyen Van Hai in the 61kg category, and Dinh Hong Quan in the 60kg category.
