Biotechnology to advance the @_AfricanUnion#KampalaDeclaration!
Biotechnology presents a transformative opportunity for Africa to address pressing challenges in food and nutrition security, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural productivity.
The continent’s rich biodiversity, diverse agroecologies, and fledgling scientific capabilities position it to benefit from a broad suite of biotechnological applications: from genetic engineering and genome editing to biofertilizers and diagnostics. The African countries that have adopted GM crops have witnessed significant yield and income increases.
In South Africa, the introduction of GM maize, soybean, and cotton helped raise farmers’ incomes by more than $1 billion, increasing annual crop yields by 32%. Nigeria’s farmers now grow GM maize and GM cowpea –varieties that have been improved to resist infestation and destruction by insect pests, therefore requiring fewer or even no pesticide applications.

Precision agriculture tools such as drones, satellite imaging, GPS-guided machinery, and smart irrigation systems are enabling more efficient use of water, fertilizers, and other inputs while increasing yields. At the same time, climate-resilient crops developed through biotechnology and conventional breeding are helping farmers better withstand drought, salinity, pests, and diseases.

Despite several external shocks, intra-African agricultural trade tripled between 2003 and 2023. However, Africa remains heavily dependent on food imports from the rest of the world. Increasing intra-African trade can be a coping strategy for global crises and supply chain disruptions. Policies that prioritize regional self-sufficiency should be pursued more actively, particularly within the framework of the @AfCFTA.

Rice sits at the heart of Africa’s food security challenge and opportunity.
Driven by population growth, rising incomes, and urbanization, demand is projected to surge over the coming decades. Africa already imports around 15 million tons of rice annually, accounting for roughly 40% of continental consumption. By 2033, imports are projected to rise by 56%, positioning Africa as the world’s largest rice-importing region and accounting for 40% of global rice imports.
Reversing this trend will require a decisive productivity push: improving water-use efficiency, expanding irrigation, scaling adoption of drought-resistant varieties, and strengthening aggregation, processing, and milling capacity to boost competitiveness and reduce import dependence.
