Building on our Mach 5 success, the Reaction Engines team, in partnership with the AFRL, advanced the FCT program to achieve over 10MW of heat transfer! Using the same heat exchanger design from 2019 but a different working fluid, allowed for much higher air mass flow rates.
Celebrating 5 years since Mach 5! On October 22, 2019, the Reaction Engines team achieved our most impressive test results. Our unique precooler successfully quenched airflow temperatures in excess of 1,000°C (~1,800°F) in less than 1/20th of a second at our Colorado test site.

Matt Swift, Solution Architect, will be speaking at @EHAerospaceTech
Thursday 31st October, 9:00 AM
Topic: Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Tech
Hear how our thermal management innovations are shaping hydrogen-fuelled flight, covering sustainability, safety and efficiency. 🌍
In 2019, we demonstrated our engine precooler operating at airflow temperatures equivalent to Mach 5! Our advanced microtube precooler cooled the incoming air at temperatures as hot as molten lava (1,800 F / 1,000 C) down to ambient temperature in 1/20th of a second.

The Viper precooler test campaign was the first of many ground-based tests. For this integrated test, ambient airflow was deeply precooled in front of a Viper jet engine. The results validated our precooler’s impressive heat exchange capability and advanced design. #precooler
IF Oxford science is underway and Reaction Engines is participating in the BLAST! Day on 28th October in Blackbird Leys Awesome Science and Technology zone. We’d love to see you there!
