During #VolunteersWeek we introduced a few of our wonderful team who are helping some of the 8,500 adults in Telford and Wrekin who struggle with literacy to learn how to read.

@TelfordWrekin Our volunteers are helping adults across Telford and Wrekin to learn to read. We're grateful to all of them for their commitment and generosity 🙌
"Many adults develop amazing coping skills to find their own way to navigate being unable to read or reading confidence.
"Yes, it takes time and commitment but the rewards of knowing adults can learn or gain confidence in their reading is priceless."

Jo is our Literacy Specialist on the Management Team:
"Reading, working with and supporting adults in learning to read or improve confidence and skills is something I'm passionate about.
"I've worked in Adult Education and had the privilege of supporting many to achieve this.
"Read Easy means that this opportunity is still possible and I can be there for Readers, Coaches and peers on the Management Team, even though my day job has changed.

"Watching someone go from being a 'non reader' to telling me all about the reading book they took away from the last session is just incredible!
"Helping someone to improve their life with a skill we take for granted is incredibly rewarding."

Martin is one of our Coaches. He’s been meeting up with his Reader twice a week, for 30 minutes per session, over the last few months.
"Being a volunteer reading Coach with Read Easy has probably been my most rewarding experience.
This #ThankYouDay and #VolunteersWeek we send our appreciation to all of our Coaches and Management Team volunteers who work so hard and so passionately to give adults across #Telford and #Wrekin the chance to learn to read.
We couldn't do what we do without you - thank you 🎉
“We are an enthusiastic, hard-working group of volunteers, and it’s amazing to now have eight Readers paired with Coaches who meet twice a week to improve their literacy."

Claire was the Pioneer for Telford and Wrekin, setting up the group in October 2019:
"To find out there could be over 8,500 adults in my area who struggle with their reading shocked me. I knew I had to try and change that.
"All involved with the group are enthusiastic, friendly and passionate about making a huge difference to people’s lives by coaching them to learn to read.
"Volunteering has a positive impact on my wellbeing and outlook and only takes up a couple of hours a week".

Cindy joined the team in mid-2019 as Treasurer:
"Although I'm not directly involved in supporting residents who struggle with adult literacy, I am still grateful for the opportunity to be involved in such a fabulous organisation.
"It takes a lot of courage to ask for help, but for those who do, Read Easy has a tried and tested process for improving their skills.
"As a Coach I spend a few hours each week helping someone to work through the process. Good work to do and good fun doing it!"

Kevin is our Reader Connector and a Coach:
"Most of us are lucky and we learn to read at school. You may be surprised at how many people, for all sorts of reasons, are not so lucky and end up with poor or even no reading skills.
"I was very keen to get involved, knowing that my skills and passion for giving people this life changing opportunity could make a big difference.
"Volunteering with Read Easy is enjoyable and I’m proud of the part I can play in helping adults learn to read."

Kirstie is our Publicity Organiser and she joined the team in March 2021:
“Being able to read without second thought is such a privilege and the impact of not being able to do so is almost unimaginable.
Georgina said: "I feel happy and I'm enjoying learning with Alison. Now I can read a little sentence. I am so happy I can read with my children. Before I started I couldn't even read ABC but now I am reading sentences."
Georgina, one of our readers, completed the first Turning Pages manual with her coach Alison this week.
She has two sessions a week and, although she speaks English well, wanted to learn to read English to support her two younger children in their schooling.
‘Learning to read for me was the best thing I have ever done. My whole time with my Coach, I was inspired to improve, to write my own short poems and to understand the deeper meaning of words and this has been very useful and successful.'
