On this day 8 years ago, 17-year old Trayvon Martin was fatally shot in Sanford, Florida, while visiting family. His death sparked a movement and established the Trayvon Martin Foundation, which is dedicated to helping parents and families that have lost children to gun violence.
On this day 122 years ago, Frazier Baker and his infant daughter were lynched in Lake City, South Carolina by an enraged mob of white people because he was appointed as postmaster.
On this day 60 years ago, a bomb exploded at the home of Carlotta Walls, the youngest of the nine black students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, three years prior.
For the month of February, we will be sharing historical civil rights facts in celebration of Black History Month from the Equal Justice Initiative. We hope these facts serve as a source of inspiration and knowledge for you and those you share them with.
