At least 30 stretches of pavement across Reading will be upgraded using an innovative new process this year.
This method of treating footpaths which uses a bitumen sealing process is quicker, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than traditional methods of resurfacing but effective at maintaining the pavement at a high standard for longer.
The work can be carried out by the Council’s own Highways team, reducing time and costs, which means more pavements can be improved.
Around 160 stretches of pavement have been identified for treatment, and the work will be rolled out over the next five-years.

We’ve been investing in our school buildings and helping local wildlife at the same time.
The Council recently completed work at Alfred Sutton Primary School to fully replace the roof of the junior school, add further insulation to reduce heat loss, carry out masonry repairs to the chimneys and brickwork and install new doors and guttering.
Two swift boxes were installed as the finishing touches were being made to provide nesting sites for our summer visitors.
At Wilson Primary School, preparations for roof replacement works over three buildings found that they provided day roosts for bats.
The Council contractors are working with ecologists on site to protect the bats and their habitat, as well adding bat and swift boxes.
Pupils from both schools helped out by colourfully decorating the bat and swift boxes.
The Council work on the Victorian school buildings will improve insulation, reduce energy use and cut bills while also supporting our wildlife.
