This morning, several members of the Reading Fire Local 1640 joined hundreds of other Firefighters to attend the funeral services of Boston Firefighter Robert Kilduff. Firefighter Kilduff was killed in the line of duty during a 3 alarm fire, on the evening of May 23, 2026.
Firefighters from all of the surrounding communities, including Reading have been busy this morning responding to weather related incidents such as trees and wires down. If you encounter a downed wire, keep away, assume it is live and dial 911 for assistance.

For the past several hours, Reading Engine 3 has been assisting Lynnfield Firefighters with a 4 alarm fire on Melody Lane. Mutual aid allows our departments to have appropriate and adequate resources at an emergency scene.
Training never stops but as the weather gets nicer, crews take the opportunity to get outside! Recently crews from group 3 drilled with their FFOPs throwing ground ladders and completing pump and master stream evolutions.

Last night Reading’s Police and Fire Departments held their annual badge pinning, promotions and awards. New firefighters and promoted officers received badges; members received service recognitions, meritorious and outstanding conduct awards, unit citations and lifesaving awards

Just after 8pm last night, units were dispatched to a vehicle off the road in the area of Walkers Brook Drive. Crews arrived to a vehicle 15 feet into the woods, down an embankment with 1 occupant still inside. The patient was extricated and transported to a trauma center.

You may notice American flags at half staff tomorrow, Sunday, May 3, 2026. Flags nationwide — including at the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and many Reading buildings — will be lowered in observance of the annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Maryland.
Crews from group 1 recently reviewed our standpipe firefighting equipment and apartment hose line stretches. This equipment and these tactics would be used should we respond to a fire in one of the larger buildings in town including many of the large apartment buildings.
In October, our organization trained on and implemented a new department wide Incident Command and Incident Management model. Over the past several months, our members have continued to expand that training through additional classes and fireground simulations.
Please join us as we recognize Firefighter-Paramedic David Ferreira for the life saving actions that he performed while off duty. His actions demonstrate that all first responders are never truly off duty.

Just after 3 PM yesterday, crews responded to Pearl Street for a fire in a trash truck. To protect the vehicle, the driver dumped the load into the roadway, where responders found active flames in the debris. Crews quickly extinguished the fire.
