We often hear of the myriad of paradoxes in life, the complex interplay of forces that often leaves us scratching our heads in wonderment. There’s an intriguing one I have learned through my years on the baseball field as a player in the Seattle Mariners organization. This paradox rests on a seemingly innocuous balance between two human actions: trying and trusting.

Picture the baseball diamond. As a pitcher, when I stride out onto the mound, the weight of expectation is heavy on my shoulders. In this high-stakes environment, we are compelled to operate at the peak of our capabilities, squeezing out every ounce of ability, harnessing all our power to throw the ball with maximum effort.

Yet, in this physically and emotionally draining game, we have our off-days. The fastball loses its zip, the slider lacks bite, our body seems out of sync with our mind. And this is where the grand paradox takes center stage. It's when we fall into the trap of trying to overreach our present capabilities that we start to 'try' too hard, instead of placing our 'trust' in ourselves and our skills honed through hours of painstaking practice.

I’ve faced many of these situations, and each time I forced myself to push harder, to reach beyond what was practically possible that day, my performance fell. I threw more balls than strikes, misjudged pitches, essentially reducing my effectiveness. Instead, had I just trusted in the ability that I possessed that day, the result might have been different. The dichotomy of 'Trust over Try' is a profound lesson that has emerged from these experiences.

Yet, trust isn't a mystical entity that appears out of thin air. This isn’t about blind faith or unfounded confidence. Rather, it's about an assured faith in one’s ability, a faith built on the bedrock of effort, training, and discipline. You cannot just flip a switch and decide to trust yourself. Trust is a hard-earned ally, nurtured through relentless practice and unwavering dedication.

If I aspire to throw harder, I can't merely wish it into being. I need to train for it, sweat for it, until my body knows it can achieve it, and my mind trusts in its capability. Trying can only take you so far. It is trust that carries you over the line.

We can transpose this principle of 'Trust over Try' to our broader lives as well. What's that aspect in your life where you're reaching, trying, straining, but still falling short? Could it be that you've been focusing too much on the 'trying' and not enough on the 'trusting'?

Once you identify this area, it's time to scrutinize the level of effort you've put in. Have you really invested the time, energy, and focus necessary to develop unshakeable trust in yourself?

'Trust over Try' is more than a pitcher’s mantra, it’s a blueprint for personal excellence. As we apply it, not just in sports, but across the diverse arenas of life, we can elevate our performance and satisfaction to levels we never thought possible.

So, let's stop just 'trying' and start 'trusting', because that is where true mastery lies. Trust earned through hard work, perseverance, and self-belief is our most potent weapon on the journey to self-realization.
