Uche Jombo did something incredibly admirable when she visited Alexx Ekubo’s wife and family, and I’m just realizing how intentional that act was.

From the tributes and messages we’ve seen since the breakup, one thing is very clear: Alexx wanted his private life to remain private. So private that he reportedly kept his diagnosis within his family circle and away from even some of his closest friends. So private that he got married and the public knew absolutely nothing about it.

That says a lot about the kind of boundaries he wanted around his personal life.

A few days ago, Uche Jombo paid a visit to his family, and honestly, if she hadn’t made a simple post about it, nobody would have known. There were no videos, no emotional clips for social media, no attempt to turn a sensitive moment into content. Maybe she recorded memories privately, maybe she didn’t, but the important thing is she chose not to put that moment on display.

And that right there is what it means to respect someone’s wishes and honor their privacy, even in death.

Because the truth is, some people would have done the exact opposite. They would have turned the visit into headlines, content, and clout. Eventually, the same wife Alexx fought so hard to shield from the public would have become social media discourse.

In the last 48 hours following Alexx’s death, I’ve seen friends and colleagues reveal things he clearly would never have wanted public. And while everyone has their reasons, intentionality still matters.

The reporter in me understands the nature of news — the more information that comes out, the more there is to report. But the human in me also understands dignity, boundaries, and the importance of not exposing every detail of someone’s life just because the public is curious.

UCHE JOMBO, thank you for respecting your friend’s wishes.

You may never fully know what you prevented by choosing restraint over attention.
