The alleged plot was supposedly in retaliation for COVID-19 restrictions the Democratic governor enforced on the state. In July of 2021, it was revealed that the FBI played an even bigger role in the Whitmer kidnapping plot than was initially reported.

The timing of the foiled plot drew intense scrutiny, occurring just weeks before a highly polarized presidential election and aligning closely with federal law enforcement's stated focus on domestic extremism. While early media coverage framed the case as a seamless militia conspiracy, subsequent trials revealed a far more complicated reality: the FBI relied on a massive network of informants and undercover agents who actively steered the operation.
