At independence, the vision of our founders was to create and build a federation of nation-states that guarantees human freedoms, equity, and justice for all.
They also shared a common belief that an independent Nigeria, with its abundant human and natural resource endowments, will achieve rapid economic growth and advance the security, well-being, and prosperity of its citizens.
Therefore, the independence anniversary provides another opportunity for us as a nation to honour our founders for the independence they struggled to accomplish and reflect on the progress we have made as a country since then.
Worthy of note is our evolving democracy, which we have enjoyed for the last 24 years despite the imperfections in our electoral, legal, and judicial systems.
While we relish the value of independence, it must foster national cohesion, economic progress, and social justice. I recognize that we have challenges but collectively, we as a nation, will overcome them all.
However, this will require us, as leaders and citizens, to work together towards fulfilling the aspirations for sustainable human security and access to life’s basic needs, including quality education, healthcare, food, decent housing, and social security among others.
In Rivers State, we will continue to subscribe to the continued existence of Nigeria as one indivisible country and do our best to cement the bounds of national unity.
As a government, we are articulating a long-term strategic development plan for the State that will sustainably transform its economy, accelerate development, and improve the living standards of all.
I assure you that we will redouble our efforts to consolidate, improve on where we are, and deliver on our mandate and vision for a more secure, productive, and prosperous future for our State and all residents.
Today, we joined the rest of the country to celebrate the 63rd year of independence of our nation. We are quite certain that we have made steady progress despite some challenges. We can confidently say that we are gradually growing in our democracy as it has been sustained for 24 years.
I therefore congratulate all Nigerians for this remarkable feat.
Over these first 100 days, we have taken quality steps to advance the well-being of our people in the face of the economic hardship caused the sudden withdrawal of fuel subsidies, unemployment, and rising inflation.
We are happy to note the palliatory effect of the free bus transport scheme we have put in place since July to cushion the high cost of living for ordinary citizens. I assure you of our intention to sustain these and other mitigating measures, including the distribution of food to the vulnerable population, for a considerable time.
I also wish to inform residents that we have since set up an intergovernmental flood management committee with the responsibility to respond proactively to the looming flooding that may affect the inhabitants of the lowlands and flood plains of our State as predicted by the National Emergency Management Agency.
With the launching of the flood mitigation road map, I can assure all residents that we are on red alert to respond to any imminent flood challenge in the State and provide safety and relief to those who will be affected.
I, therefore, appeal to corporate bodies, well-meaning individuals, and non-governmental organizations to be ready to materially support the Committee to succeed in this critical assignment to rescue our vulnerable people.
