Reps probe NILDS boss over Kwara governorship bid claims
The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, over allegations of active participation in partisan politics while in office.
The probe followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance on Thursday by a lawmaker from Katsina State, Salisu Yusuf, and 12 others.
The lawmakers in their motion argued that the development raises serious concerns about adherence to public service regulations and the political neutrality expected of officials occupying sensitive public offices.
Leading the debate on the motion during plenary, Yusuf told the House that Sulaiman allegedly participated in the All Progressives Congress governorship primary process in Kwara State while still occupying his position as Director-General of NILDS.
He said, “Evidence already in the public domain showed that the NILDS boss purchased nomination forms, underwent screening and contested in the primary election, where he reportedly secured 1,722 votes.”
The lawmaker said the development had “generated widespread concern, particularly given the strategic role of NILDS as a non-partisan institution established to provide research, policy support and capacity development for the National Assembly and other democratic institutions.”
He further informed the House that a petition submitted by the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners accused the NILDS Director-General of abuse of office and failure to comply with extant laws governing public officers.
Yusuf argued that the allegations, “if proven, would amount to a violation of provisions regulating the conduct of public servants seeking elective political office.”
According to the motion, Sulaiman did not resign from office before joining the political contest, despite provisions of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers and a presidential directive requiring political appointees and public officials seeking elective positions to resign by March 31, 2026.
Lawmakers backing the motion warned that failure to address the issue could “weaken discipline within the public service and erode public confidence in institutions expected to operate above partisan interests.”
They cautioned that allowing senior public officials to openly participate in party primaries while retaining their positions would set a “dangerous precedent” for agencies and institutions under the National Assembly and across government.
Following the debate, the House adopted the motion and mandated its Committee on Legislative Library, Research and Documentation to investigate the allegations and report back within one week.
The motion was adopted after it was seconded and put to a voice vote at a session presided over by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.
The controversy touches on longstanding provisions in Nigeria’s public service framework designed to separate public administration from partisan politics.
As DG of NILDS, Sulaiman heads an institution created to strengthen legislative practice, democratic governance and public policy development.
The institute serves the National Assembly through research, legislative drafting support, training programmes and policy analysis.
Because of its mandate, NILDS is widely regarded as one of the key non-partisan institutions supporting Nigeria’s democratic process.
The investigation is also coming amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several public office holders reportedly positioning themselves for elective offices across the country.

I am so happy that finally Kaduna State govt has signed into law three critical issues that will improve livelihoods of our people.
2: The Gov of kaduna State @ubasanius signed into law:
-(a): Electricity Bill. Kaduna state will benefit from Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline. So having this law in place, it will enable investors to fast track investment.
-(b): Kaduna State Agricultural Development Fund: This will help farmers a lot. You will recall that agriculture contributes 43% to the state’s GDP. Joy don come for farmers.
-(c): Kaduna State Climate Change Advisory Board law 2026: an institutional
Framework for environmental sustainability. Farmers will still benefit from this law. @Islamolowo1@Kadunaelectric@MOIKaduna@Better_Kaduna@bodbellls@ui_shehu@ummuh_Zahra@UbaSaniMedia_@Mansaah_Musa@RealBushariSMA@AShammeh@Prince_Zamani09@thezarmeen
Earlier today, along with the SSAP (Students Engagement), Comrade Sunday Asefon [@asefon_sunday], and the SA (Delivery and Monitoring Youth Initiatives), Oloye Titilope Gbadamosi [@titilopegb], I met with the leadership/management of the Ministry of Youth Development, ably led by the Honorable Minister, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim [@DrJamila_Bio] and the Honorable Minister of State, Comrade Ayodele Olawande [@AyOlawande].
Also present was the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar.
We had extensive deliberations on the duties and responsibilities attached to our respective offices, and committed to working as one in furtherance of President @OfficialABAT’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
I look forward to a harmonious working relationship with the Ministers, fellow presidential aides and stakeholders in the civil service cadre of the Ministry.
It is my ardent hope that together, we can meet - and exceed - the expectations of young Nigerians.
Who else should take the accolade for the phenomenal growth of the stock market, the ASI moving from 53,000 points to 250,000 in three years? Government policies and the reforms being implemented on several fronts are responsible for the growth and the mega profits and dividends that listed companies are recording. A newspaper captured it well by describing the phenomenon as TINUBULL. Your hatred and denial of the greatest reformer in Nigeria's history have been taken too far. You should be ashamed of this post.
ORIIRE LOCAL GOVERNMENT, OYO STATE: FAAC DISBURSEMENT
1: Orire LGA has been receiving an average of N485 million monthly from FAAC.
2: Question: no primary school renovation, no security etc.
3: May I suggest to @FIUNigeria to use Orire LGA as a model for local government allocation Utilization
4: Transparency shouldn’t be optional. These funds should be utilized as it should be
5: What are you doing with your security votes?
-(a): You don’t have vigilante groups, no security vehicles, no health care centre, despite the revenue you receive from the FG not Tinubu.
6: Wet the ground for the people, Chairman.
7: If insecurity persist despite these allocations, then accountability questions are inevitable
8; The era of “we don’t know what happened to the money” is OVER.

PRESS STATEMENT
ON THE VISIT TO THE OYO STATE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE REGARDING THE ABDUCTION OF STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN ORIIRE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Today, in my capacity as the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and in furtherance of our advocacy for the immediate rescue and safe return of the abducted students and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, I led a delegation of NANS to the Oyo State Police Headquarters, where we met with the Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji.
I strongly condemned the heinous abduction of our students and teachers. I stressed that their continued captivity compelled me to temporarily relocate the NANS Headquarters to Oyo State. I briefed the Commissioner of Police that our visit to the state was aimed at engaging the government and security agencies, as well as commiserating with the families of the victims and visiting the affected schools.
I further stated that NANS is an ideology-driven organization with a clear mandate to represent and advance the collective interests of Nigerian students. We are fully aware of the responsibility we shoulder, and we operate with a well-defined modus operandi that is neither impulsive nor unilateral.
Going forward, I commended the efforts and sacrifices of the security operatives while appealing to them to intensify their efforts toward the immediate rescue and safe return of the abducted students and teachers. I also urged them to strengthen security across our campuses and educational institutions.
In my address, I stated:
"We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. However, we cannot afford to allow these terrorists to win. Therefore, this has become a collective struggle for all of us. At the same time, we must not place undue pressure on our security operatives in a manner that would make these criminals believe they have overwhelmed the system. This is not the time for blame-shifting but a time for unity, collaboration, and collective action to bring an end to this tragedy."
In his remarks, the Commissioner of Police acknowledged the current leadership of NANS as truly ideology-driven and noted that we have demonstrated a high level of maturity and responsibility. He stressed that we are at a critical juncture where all stakeholders must support the security agencies to ensure the immediate rescue and safe return of the abducted students and teachers. He further stated that this is not a time to exploit the situation for political gain, emphasizing that journalism and activism serve different purposes.
He assured us of the commitment and ongoing efforts of the security agencies to secure the immediate rescue and safe return of the abducted students and teachers, noting that they share in our pain and grief as parents and citizens.
Furthermore, he assured us that, despite the challenges, the security operatives would do everything within their capacity to ensure that Nigerians are not disappointed.
As President of NANS, I wish to assure Nigerian students that their mandate remains safe in my hands, and I will never compromise on my responsibility to protect and advance their interests.
Viva Aluta!
Thank you.
Yours in solidarity,
Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, GCNS
President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)
One of the most dangerous things happening on social media today is the deliberate spread of fake security alerts, recycled videos of bandits that were neutralized years ago, and fabricated kidnap stories designed to trigger panic and outrage.
Every day, people circulate old videos as if they happened yesterday. Others manufacture stories of kidnappings and attacks that never occurred. When security agencies, or people expose the falsehood, the same people quietly delete their posts and move on, with no consequences for the fear, confusion, and anxiety they have already created.
The unfortunate consequence is that citizens are gradually becoming desensitized. When genuine security threats emerge, many people now struggle to distinguish between real alerts and fabricated stories.
Government must begin to take the deliberate spread of false security information more seriously. Individuals who knowingly circulate fake security reports capable of causing panic should face appropriate sanctions under existing laws. Freedom of expression should not be confused with the freedom to spread falsehoods that endanger public order.
A society where everyone is constantly crying wolf will eventually ignore the real wolf when it appears. We cannot afford that. Security is too important to be sacrificed on the altar of clout, politics, engagement farming, or social media relevance.
