Had an "interview" for a blockchain project last week.

Camera was on, we're chatting, and the guy tells me to clone a GitHub repo and run it locally before we go further into the technical round.

I said sure, but first can you do me a favor

hold up 3 fingers in front of your face for me real quick.

He froze.

Didn't move.

Just sat there for a few seconds before the call cut off and he blocked me.

That's when I knew. A real interviewer doesn't glitch out over a random ask like that. A deepfake/AI overlay does.

These "run this repo" scams are getting scary common in crypto and dev hiring right now.

The setup is always the same:

- flattering DM
- real-sounding project
- rushed timeline
- a "quick step" before the call

that's really just remote access or a credential stealer in disguise.

If someone wants you to run code or install something before you've even had a real conversation, that's the whole scam.

Trust the instinct. Stay safe out there.

If you use Google Chrome, it’s a good idea to check your hard drive. Privacy researcher Alexander Hanff just released a detailed investigation showing that Google has quietly installed a huge 4 GB Gemini Nano AI model on user devices without any prompt, notification, or consent.

Hanff discovered this by analyzing macOS kernel logs, which applications cannot fake. He saw Chrome checking the system’s GPU and VRAM to decide if the computer was eligible. After passing the check, Chrome waited until the browser was idle, then started a large background download of a file called weights.bin. This approach uses your hardware for Google’s purposes and ignores the usual trust boundaries expected from a browser.

The design raises concerns because it seems misleading. Chrome recently added a visible "AI Mode" button in the address bar. You might think the large 4 GB file on your SSD powers this feature, but it does not. The button mostly relies on the cloud, so your queries are still sent to Google’s servers. This gives the impression of privacy, but in reality, user data is still processed remotely.

When this is done across Chrome’s huge user base, the environmental and financial impact is significant. For people on metered data plans or mobile hotspots, where data is costly, this silent download becomes a real financial burden.

Additionally, if you find and delete the file, Chrome does not respect your choice. Instead, it sees the deletion as a corruption and quietly downloads the 4 GB file again the next time you open the browser.

Today is #EarthDay . Galamsey by nefarious persons are on the daily destroying our rivers and forests whilst leaders look on instead of taking drastic action.
How do we keep quiet whilst our very future is being destroyed right in front of our eyes?? Many Ghanaians like myself voted @JDMahama into power believing that he would immediately ensure culprits are brought to book and our environment would be saved. But honestly, I am so so disappointed. Decade old trees which preserve our climate, provide food are being destroyed for greedy politicians and celebrities and nobody is lifting a finger because the culprits finance the political parties.

Many communities don’t even have access to clean water because of galamsey and yet we suffer in silence! Common water oh! Children are being born with birth defects due to mercury-infested waters and politicians are looking away. Mothers are giving birth in hospitals which don’t even have water.

We have politicians attending environment events in Europe who come home and take no action except spend their per diem on shopping for their side chicks. Ghana!
