There was a time (pre-2015) where "migrant crime" was just a racist neonazi conspiracy in my home country. Fringe forums would dig up these freak isolated cases or flat-out make stuff up. And look where we are now. They don't have to make up shit.
@movie__maniac Yeah I found that quite baffling as well. There's just this goofy context free and aggressively ahistorical army in the forest. Maybe some kind of artistic philosophical point he was trying to make about war or something?
@DaxwellsMemon Yeah I need to know what happened with these 40 people. Where are they, who are they, do they work and pay taxes? They can't all be at that one bloody restaurant now, can they?
@BorrachinhaMMA Greeks ended up being underrepresented. Really takes you out when you're looking for some immersion into Greek history. Obviously migration already existed but would these people be so front and centre in that particular story? I'd rather see a new story about these migrants
@JonnyRoot_ Lots to criticise this movie for: Unintentionally funny and a real slog at times, while some scenes went too fast like Agamemnon's murder. That was actually a compelling substory but swoosh. Costumes and props were awful. Hades was a beach. Beautiful shots occasionally though
Does this sound like a country that can take lots more unskilled poor vulnerable mentally ill foreigners?
Take all the incentives that keep luring them to the UK & reinvest it all in healthcare for whoever is already here.
Spare ppl the dangerous trip just to add to the mess.
The Odyssey sidenote: People tried their best to convince me otherwise by selecting the worst stills & I disagree with the general casting direction (fairy tale approach) but Lupita N'yongo is just a very pretty woman and absolutely sold her role of Helen to me.
You can cast The Odyssey like Moana, or like Cinderella. I thought the casting with Brandy & the multiethnic royal family worked perfectly. It's a story, a fairy tale.
For me The Odyssey's more a Moana-case. It's the history of living people and a whole civilization's religion.
The casting + screen time allocation of the Odyssey felt like blatant box checking for Oscar DEI requirements - who are two-fold btw. You can also be a diverse crew behind the scenes & make this movie just with Greeks
The underrepresentation of Greeks does take you out a little
We didn't expect to laugh so much watching The Odyssey. Worst was the sequence with Odysseys punishing the suitors. You thought, nice, here comes the payoff, but no... maybe Homer's poem is just this goofy and confusing. Maybe they adapted it too literally?
Character in The Odyssey: "Our bronze age is over". He knows he's in the bronze age?? Did we not assign that name later?
Maybe this movie feels more convincing after reading Homer again, I don't know.
The Odyssey is such a weird contrived Hollywood fever dream. The main message is that 1 day in 1 war magically destroyed the concept of hospitality which then causes the downfall of civilization and the end of the bronze age. They literally say all this in the movie.
@JohnCleese A friend of mine kept insisting that Charlie Kirk was a right-wing murder. It's just the blind hatred of the left again. They try so hard not to see the obvious. They'd rather look away. I have no idea how to make them see anything.
Anyone remember "words are violence" bullshit?
These police stats are 29k "knife attacks", 13k "threatening with knife" and 14k "in context of violent crime".
What do you mean??
I'm sure the victims that got away unscathed still felt the fucking violence.
Knives are violence.
US Congressional Candidate Melissa Chaudhry claims she's all about courage on her website but finds no courage to promote inclusive Islam https://t.co/QZH7wGmxDm
@PositivFuturist Great example of the usual lefty mix of selective empathy + all-or-nothing thinking. What about creating better conditions for the animals we eat? Let's start by banning halal & kosher meat.
Idea: If judges release violent criminals with prior offences immediately after offending again, the criminal is moved into the judges home for "supervision".
