Lost sales from locking-up products reduced the gross profit on those missed sales (15 to 30%).

However, outright theft costs the full cost of the item (70 to 85% of the $5 retail price).

Machinist’s mate Kristian Saucier used his personal cellphone to take six photos from inside his submarine, then moored at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.

He was 22 years old at the time.

After discovery, he was arrested and pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized retention of defense information.

Sentenced to one year in prison, plus six months of home confinement with electronic monitoring, and three years of supervised release. He received an other-than-honorable discharge from the Navy.

Saucier’s defense compared it to the handling of Hillary Clinton’s emails, arguing for leniency (probation). The judge rejected that but noted Saucier was otherwise a “good person” who did a “beyond stupid” thing, leading to a lighter sentence than the guidelines suggested.
