In 2006, two miners survived 14 days trapped underground. While awaiting rescue, they asked for an iPod with Foo Fighters songs. After hearing the story, Dave Grohl sent a note into the mine, promising them concert tickets and beers once they were safely out.

On April 25, 2006, a small earthquake triggered a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine in Tasmania. Of the three miners trapped, Larry Knight, 44, was k*lled instantly.

Todd Russell and Brant Webb survived inside the basket of a telehandler they had been working in.

Their first six days were spent in complete isolation, surviving on a single energy bar and water seeping through rock.

They were found alive on the sixth day.

A link was drilled through to them, allowing rescuers to pass down food, water, magazines, torches, and telephones. Then came the iPod request.

Grohl heard that the miners had asked for Foo Fighters songs and sent a note reading: "Though I'm halfway around the world right now, my heart is with you both, and I want you to know that when you come home, there's 2 tickets to any Foos show, anywhere, and 2 cold beers waiting for yous. Deal?"

The men were rescued on May 9, 2006, fourteen days after being trapped.

Grohl kept his promise, meeting Brant Webb at the Sydney Opera House that October. He wrote Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners, which appeared on the Foo Fighters' 2007 album Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace.

Webb joined Grohl on stage in Launceston in December 2025, just miles from the mine site, as the song was played live.

The two men who were trapped together never spoke again after the rescue. Russell and Webb fell out shortly afterward and have had nothing to do with each other since.
