My Takeaways From The Dolphins 48-20 Loss To The Bills In Week 4:
• Achane has looked like RB1 on limited work over the last two weeks and I don’t see that changing
• Berrios converted that 4th down and you can’t convince me otherwise
• That said, McDaniel needs to give him the ball on 4th and 1 when he was averaging 6.3 YPC at the time and the pass pro wasn’t holding up for Tua. McDaniel’s lack of trust in the run game with his situational play calling wasn’t justified.
• Get Eichenberg off of this team. He’s not an NFL caliber player. Not only is he a liability to Tua’s health, he’s one of the main reasons Armstead got rolled up on
• Borderline malpractice if they don’t make a move for a Vet Center whether it’s someone sitting at home or off the roster of a bad team in case Connor’s injury will cost more time or could be nagging. At worst, activate Uluave whose natural at the position over Liam.
• The pass pro was so bad McDaniel resorted to abusing screens at one point to manufacture the ball out of Tua’s hand as quickly as possible. The timing and rhythm of this offense can’t work with that poor of protection. McDermott clearly adjusted and adapted after Miami’s first two scoring drives and they began collapsing the interior regularly.
• Connor Williams and DeShon Elliott’s injuries impacted this team much more than Armstead’s
• A lot of self inflicted wounds on defense with bad penalties, poor tackling, angles, fundamentals, etc.
• Like I’ve been saying for weeks - Fangio doesn’t have the personnel, especially with the interior pass rush and the second level LBers. He’s going to have to marry what Boyer and Flores did with this personnel more with his defense and manufacture pressure/sacks for them more
• Van Ginkel needs to forced either Chubb or Phillips to the bench as he’s the teams best pass rusher
• Kader Kohou is a slot CB being pushed to the boundary and has performed admirably but clearly isn’t ready for an elite player like Diggs out there who even gave Ramsey the work on opening day last year
• Seems a lot of people wanted X on Diggs and with what we saw Sutton do to him, mixed in with how he’s looked slow and like he’s lost a step in his change of direction ability, I don’t think the results would have been that much better
• Bethel got cooked a few times and even I may have underestimated just how much of an uphill battle Brandon Jones has to unseat DeShon Elliott in this defense because that was arguably his worst game as a professional yesterday
• In no reality is Wilkins earning $20+ million per year from me right now if I’m Chris Grier
• Fangio is going to rebuild that LBer core this off-season and Baker’s trending towards being shown the door. Looked like he was benched for Riley at one point. Do they pursue a Devin White or someone at the deadline?
• Even Jevon Holland struggled mightily at times on Sunday who has been playing at an All Pro level
• Really frustrating to watch penalties (Kohou’s unnecessary roughness and OPI) help the Bills put points on the board and take points off the board for Miami (Eichenberg’s penalty that nullified Waddle’s TD). That’s a 21 point swing between those three penalties.
Make no doubt about it - the Dolphins had a target on their back after Week 3 and got their behinds handed to them by the Buffalo Bills who haven’t lost at home to Miami since 2016. This doesn’t change how I feel or think about this team - they have all the potential in the world. We all knew they would face adversity and this season wouldn’t be smooth sailing, well it came earlier than we expected and now it’s up to this team to respond.
With the Giants and Carolina they have a chance to right the ship, get to 5-1 and head into a 3 game stretch (PHI, NE & KC) that I think will give us more answers on who this team really is than Week 4 did.
Have to take this L on the chin and move onto the Giants this week. Let’s get the W. #finsup
