「❀ Behind Kasumi‘s new #DOA6LR costume」
Q: What was the design concept? Did you use any particular references?
As a new costume for Kasumi, the team came up with a variety of ideas, including a futuristic sci-fi outfit and cute casual clothing. While all of the concepts were good, we ultimately chose the one that best conveyed Kasumi’s solitude, dignity, and above all, her strength as the main protagonist of Dead or Alive.
Kasumi already has many ninja outfits, including “Brilliant Lapis” (瑠璃光). This time, however, we combined a modern combat suit with design elements inspired by traditional Japanese jinbaori (a surcoat worn over armor by samurai) and samurai armor. The result is a costume that feels modern, yet still carries a distinctly traditional Japanese atmosphere.
Q: What was the naming concept behind the costume?
For the series name, we chose “Senjin” (戦陣, “Battle Formation” or “Battle Lines”), imagining Kasumi standing at the forefront of the battlefield. Even though she became a runaway ninja, the costume features an embroidered “霞” (Kasumi) to symbolize her resolve to continue carrying the name and legacy of the Mugen Tenshin ninja school. As for the individual costume names, we chose the names of flowers whose flower meanings evoke the image of Kasumi as a woman, rather than just as a ninja or fighter.
Q: What aspects did you put the most effort into and what would you especially like players to notice?
We paid particular attention to capturing the traditional Japanese textures, especially those of the armor and jinbaori. For example, the reflections on the lacquered armor change depending on the stage’s lighting, giving the costume a different look in different environments.
We hope players will enjoy seeing it in a variety of situations!
「The inclusion of Virtua Fighter characters」
Q: In DOA5, Akira, Sarah and Pai from Virtua Fighter appear as guest characters. How did that come about?
Hayashi: We wanted more fans to become interested in DOA and considering it was a very anticipated release, we thought partnering with Sega would be exciting. So, I approached them with the idea. At that time, we were early in development, none of the staff knew about their inclusion. One day, I suddenly asked Shimbori, “If we include Virtua Fighter characters, which ones would you want?” (laughs).
Shimbori: As a joke, I said my main character, El Blaze. But then I was told, “It’s GOT to be Akira” (laughs).
Hayashi: When we presented the idea to Sega, they were fully supportive, saying they wanted to revitalize the fighting game genre together. After getting their approval, Shimbori and his team worked directly with their director. It went very smoothly till the end.
Shimbori: We started with a lack of knowledge and since creating a character requires absolute mastery, I was super worried. Then I found out that one of the staff was a Virtua Fighter enthusiast and mained Akira. We played Virtua Fighter all night, and after about 30 losses I thought, “I can trust this person,” and appointed him as the lead for the Virtua Fighter characters’ adjustments. The result was very satisfying.
Q: How did you choose the characters?
Shimbori: Producer Hayashi set the conditions: choosing 1 male and 1 female character from the first Virtua Fighter game. Akira was a given, so we discussed who the female character should be. Sarah was an easy pick. However, for the third character, it was between Jacky and Pai. Eventually, we decided on Pai, thinking it suited DOA better. Did we decide that by majority vote?
Hayashi: We felt that fans wouldn’t be disappointed seeing Pai in DOA, maintaining the image of having cute female characters in the game. There was also discussions about including Kage-Maru, but various conditions prevented that. After reviewing all the Virtua fighter characters, we decided on these three first.
「✃ Behind Tamaki's new #DOA6LR outfit」
When Tamaki was introduced to Dead or Alive 6 from DOAXVV, she wore a costume that emphasized her identity as a martial artist (Aikido practitioner).
While creating this new costume we wanted to express Tamaki’s personal charm beyond simply being a fighter. She is a former model who became a fashion designer and is a sexy mature woman who loves alcohol, beautiful things & especially fashionable women.
Above all, she loves making everyone around her have fun and enjoys herself just as much.
With that in mind, we asked ourselves what kind of outfit would she choose to express herself if she were to enter the tournament once again. The costume was designed around the concept of “a new runway outfit that Tamaki herself created to express who she is.” We believe it became a costume that is beautiful and alluring, captivating people with its sexiness while also being flashy, sparkling and full of energy, something that makes anyone who sees it smile.
For the series name, we chose “Phenomenon.”
It symbolizes both Tamaki’s exceptional talent and the positive energy she has that naturally draws others into her orbit. At the same time, it has an elegant, beautiful sound that feels like a word Tamaki herself would choose. As for the individual costume names, we took the opposite approach. Rather than overthinking, we imagined her casually saying, “This works, doesn’t it?” and named them after alcoholic drinks and cocktails, something she loves. In the DOAX series, Helena’s swimsuits are also named after cocktails, so this serves as a subtle way of expressing the connection between the two.
The costume incorporates a wide variety of materials and textures, including the delicate lace, luxurious fur and flashy glittering bottoms. Because of this, we’d love for players to view it from many different angles and on different stages to fully appreciate all its details.
Lastly, we’d love people to notice the sexy design that incorporates “Noctiluca” Tamaki’s signature swimsuit into the costume. We hope fans will enjoy seeing that iconic swimsuit reimagined here.
「ʚɞ Behind Ayane's new #DOA6LR outfit」
Ayane has worn many different outfits throughout the series. In addition to the combat ones, she also has a wide variety of casual clothes.
One consistent aspect of her style is that she looks especially good in what you might call “street fashion.” With that in mind, our goal this time was to take that direction as far as possible while staying true to Ayane’s personality. We believe the result is a costume that is modern, cool and cute, but above all conveys a sense of strength that no one can match, a look that feels unmistakably like Ayane.
Q: What is the concept behind the costume’s name?
All of the names are taken from Ayane’s move names. The title, “Remaining Shadow”, reflects the image of leaving a lasting impression on anyone who sees her on the streets. Likewise, each individual costume name is based on one of Ayane’s techniques, with words chosen to best match the style and feel of that particular outfit.
Q: What aspects did you put the most effort into, and what would you especially like players to notice?
The long scarf, the decorative cloth around her waist, and many other parts of the outfit sway naturally with her quick movements, making it fun to watch in motion.
In DOA6, players can also freely change hairstyles (including hats) and glasses. Since this was a great opportunity, we created some new variations for Ayane by adding a knit cap and a pair of bold, distinctive sunglasses to the design. We hope you’ll have fun mixing and matching the different customization options!
