1st FIFA announces the 2030 World Cup will be played on 3 (!) continents. Per FIFA rules, no continent can have two consecutive WCs. Hours later, Saudi Arabia announces its intention to bid for the 2034 World Cup. What a coincidence! Almost as if it had been planned that way!

@axios I wish they would invest similarly in local news coverage. @EllieRushing and @jeremyrroebuck are bright spots. If they had 5 or 6 more local beat reporters like them and fewer Yass-sponsored op-ed writers, it would do more for circulation than an ad campaign.

@vidabjohnson @CBHessick Just imagine the expense and strain on the system if every criminal case were forced to go all the way to trial-court time, lawyer time, juror time-and every convicted person were then subject to a lengthy post-trial sentence, as the professor is suggesting!

@CBHessick I guess I ought to buy your book to better understand. It seems like we incentivize foregoing of all kinds of constitutionally protected conduct. And we recognize knowing waiver in lots of 4A, 5A, and 6A contexts apart from pleas. But this is an interesting discussion. Thank you!

@CBHessick This seems like a framing thing, right? No one is "punished" for going to trial. In the fed system, they simply don't get guideline points for timely acceptance of responsibility. They have voluntarily chosen to forego the incentives offered to those who elect to plead.

@RdilipkCG @CBHessick Not always. In some cases, the accused does not dispute the facts the government would present at a trial. That person is still constitutionally entitled to a jury trial. Lawyers just call those slow-motion guilty pleas. Without incentives to plead, they would happen all the time

@herculezg I don't think cap-tying a promising dual national is a bad reason for a call-up. But McGlynn has done more. He's also a dual national, and he would figure much more prominently for Ireland than Cremaschi would ever figure for Argentina. Jack's the bigger miss and better choice.

Public transit is part of NYC culture; over 50% of New Yorkers don’t have a driver’s license. Taking SEPTA to a sports venue is not part of Philly’s culture.

@FrancesPatano I was there. Proud of how real Union fans showed out. Real fans root for their side and jeer the opponents. Messi liked it too, which is why he ostentatiously celebrated in front of the River End. Watching @SonsofBen curse him and flip him the bird was a glorious sporting moment.
