Believing the Eighties were “traumatic” and “brutal” is what got us into the mess we are in today.

We weren’t coddled, sure, but the rewards were enormous. Because no one was considered special everyone prospered together, bruises and all.

Yet for some reason society chose to trade freedom for safety, excellence for mediocrity, and hard work for comfort.

And so now we have a world where people like Mr. Reynolds become rich and famous by manufacturing injustices to keep us all divided.

And we are all demonstrably worse off for it.

Chinese EV makers want into Canada’s empty auto plants.

Stellantis’ Brampton factory has been idle since late 2023. More than 2,200 Unifor workers are still laid off after Jeep Compass production was moved to Illinois in 2025 to dodge U.S. tariffs.Ottawa pledged up to $529 million and has already paid more than $220 million. Ontario pledged another $513 million.Unifor said on August 12 that Stellantis is evaluating a sale and has opened talks with another company. Brampton’s mayor says Chinese and Italian automakers are interested.

Canada already rejected the first Chinese pitch: assembling Leapmotor EVs from imported kits. Ottawa, Ontario, and the union shut it down because it would create almost no real manufacturing jobs and skip the Canadian supply chain.

Beijing’s EV industry is state-backed and export-driven. Canada first slapped 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs, then opened a limited import exemption. Handing a subsidized North American plant to a Chinese manufacturer now would lock in dependence after the jobs already left.

Taxpayers paid to keep this plant in Canada. Selling it into China’s industrial strategy would be a strategic failure.

One weird thing about Japanese love hotels:

Some of them are designed so you barely have to look at another human being.

You walk in and there’s a big panel showing the available rooms.

Pick one.

At some places, you pay at a machine. At others, there’s actually a person behind the front desk, but the window is covered so well that you might only see their hands.

The first time you see this, it feels a little ridiculous.

You’re running a hotel.

Why are you hiding from the customers?

Then you realize that’s kind of the point.

Nobody wants to walk into a love hotel and hear:

“GOOD EVENING, SIR! WELCOME!”

Especially when you’re standing there with someone at 11:47 PM.

So they remove as much of that interaction as possible.

Some hotels take the privacy thing even further. Parking can be hidden from the street. The layout may help guests avoid bumping into each other. You can sometimes get from the entrance to your room with almost no conversation at all.

And I have to admit, there’s something very Japanese about the solution.

They didn’t solve the awkwardness by telling everyone:

“Don’t be embarrassed. Sex is normal!”

They looked at the awkwardness and basically said:

Fair enough.

We’ll redesign the building.

A regular hotel wants the receptionist to remember your name.

A love hotel?

Please don’t.
