I haven't used 'nevertheless' in a hot minute ๐คฃ๐คฃ. I'm disappointing my fellow writers and communicators. In my defense I just used 'seldom'. That's one you don't see very often ๐คช๐คช
Last week, the Office of the IGAD Youth Envoy, in partnership with the African Union Political Affairs Department, IGAD CEWARN Unit, and UNDP Regional Service Center, hosted youth leaders from across 31 countries from within the continent for a three-day regional and national capacity building dialogue on hate speech and disinformation.
With support from the Danish people, two national platforms on countering hate speech and disinformation have been established in South Sudan and Ethiopia, and more are yet to be put in place. I challenged the participants to be the lead ambassadors in countering hate speech as well as disinformation in their respective countries.
Hate speech breeds so many conflicts; for instance, the war in the Oromia region in Ethiopia, the ethnic and tribal perceptions in Uganda, the unfair treatment of Somali citizens in Kenya, and the inter-tribal conflict in South Sudan, Sudan are all fueled by the vice.
Itโs therefore important for the youth to take the lead in countering hate speech.
