It could not last. In April 1942, Bataan fell. It was one of the worst defeats in American history, and the men who surrendered were forced on the brutal Bataan Death March.
Wermuth was too badly wounded to be driven on that march. Instead he began more than three years as a prisoner of war, an ordeal that was its own kind of nightmare.
He survived the notorious Japanese prison ships. In December 1944 he was aboard the Oryoku Maru when American aircraft, unaware that Allied POWs were packed below deck, attacked the vessel, killing hundreds of the prisoners aboard.
He survived that, along with starvation, disease, and brutal transport in boxcars.
By the end of the war he had earned four Purple Hearts. He was finally liberated in 1945.
The One-Man Army of Bataan had walked into the jungle to hunt an invading army almost alone, and somehow, against everything, he came home.
This was the story of Arthur Wermuth.
I post a story like this every single day. Most people never see them. Follow so you don't miss the next one.
Sorry folks— this is misinformation!
The reality is NC is full. We are accepting no more applications for residency until further notice.
I’m certain the NC Queen @dogwoodblooms fully agrees with me.
We need a blunt conversation because I’m seeing that Americans still aren’t mentally prepared for the threat already here on our soil.
Look at the public conversation around Nidal Hasan. People get caught up in the terrorist, the ideology, the politics. They’re MAJORING IN THE MINORS and missing the most immediate question.
Are you prepared to fight for your life against someone who is fully prepared to die killing you? That should change everything about how you think about the threat.
There are trained fedayeen attackers and suicide bombers on American soil. I’m not getting caught up in a numbers debate, but it’s far from zero. They intend to attack Americans where they live, work, and play. The current pause to the largest terrorist plot is a blessing that too many are squandering.
You need to mentally prepare for the possibility that you could face someone who has already happily accepted death as the price of killing you.
People are going to die. But when it happens, will it be you or them? You need to think about that possibility before you’re standing in front of it. You may not get a warning, a second chance, or time to process what’s happening. Be smart and use this time wisely.
Bodycam from a Feb 23, 2022, Houston PD incident at PlazAmericas Mall. Suspect Czyz Harrison (who had just fatally shot a deputy working security) approached officers while holding what they believed was a knife (later identified as an ice pick). They ordered him to drop it and show his hands. He was shot, fell, then stood up and walked away before officers tased him. He later died.
