The timing is not questionable. There is no better moment to place a crisis in its full historical and continental context than when it is actively unfolding, because that is precisely when the comfortable and the self-righteous are most eager to reduce it to a single country’s pathology and avoid the harder conversation entirely.

I am not minimising the seriousness of what is happening in South Africa. I am maximising it, by refusing to allow it to be treated as a South African aberration when it is a continental pattern with documented precedents in Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal Mauritania, Gabon , Togo, Zambia among others. Narrowing this to South Africa alone is what minimises it, because it allows every other African government and every other African population to perform outrage without examining their own record, which is exactly what they are currently doing.

The uncomfortable question this moment demands is not only why South Africa is doing this. It is why we keep doing this, as a continent, every time economic hardship arrives and a political class needs a distraction. That question implicates colonialism, corruption and the particular defeat that leads populations to direct their fury at fellow Africans rather than at the systems producing their suffering. That is not a small question. It is the only question that could actually break the cycle. And yes, I ask it precisely when the timing is sensitive, because sensitive moments are the only ones in which it might actually land.
