Our first JCSO Elementary School Youth Academy brought in some serious summer energy.
Jeffco students ages 9-11 spent the day getting a hands-on look at law enforcement through an obstacle course, bike safety course and rodeo, demos from our Drone and Traffic Unit, patrol and emergency vehicle displays, and time with our deputies.
There were bikes. There were questions. There were plenty of smiles. And somewhere out there, a couch is still wondering where everybody went.
Thank you to all the students and families who joined us for this new academy. We loved seeing these young adventurers learn, laugh, and get a closer look at what we do to serve our community.

A man has been arrested in connection with a June 7 shooting that left another man dead.
About 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2026, Aurora patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting in an alley between the 1400 blocks of Dallas and Clinton streets. When officers arrived at the scene, they located a 25-year-old man with a gunshot wound. Officers performed life-saving actions on the man until medical responders arrived at the scene. The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The victim will be identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
Investigators learned that a group of people were outside in the alley when an argument ensued. One man subsequently opened fire, killing the victim. The suspect ran from the scene before our officers arrived.
Extensive follow-up was conducted and detectives ultimately identified the suspect as 50-year-old Carlos Zarco. He was arrested by the department's Fugitive and Narcotics Unit on June 17 on a warrant for second-degree murder.
This investigation remains active and ongoing. Aurora detectives are still interested in speaking with any witnesses who may have additional information on this case. Anyone with information is urged to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867).
Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.

This federal holiday marks the end of slavery in the United States and invites us to reflect on freedom, history, and community.
Our deputies and staff remain on duty, serving and protecting our community.
Forty years later, Deputy William “Bill” Truesdale’s service and sacrifice remain part of who we are.
At 8:00 a.m. this morning, Sheriff Reggie Marinelli honored Deputy Truesdale with a moment of silence over the radio.
On June 18, 1986, Deputy Truesdale was killed in the line of duty after confronting two gunmen attempting to rob a bank in Lakewood. He was shot by both suspects and died at the scene. Both men were later sentenced to life in prison.
Today, we remember more than the way Bill died. We remember the way he served.
He was known for his sense of humor, his mentorship of others, his military service to our country, and his dedication to Jefferson County.
Law enforcement service comes with risks that every deputy understands, but days like this remind us why remembrance matters. We pause to honor those who gave everything in service to others, and to ensure their names and stories are never lost to time.
Deputy Truesdale may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

Our hearts are with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and the families of those lost. Your brothers and sisters in Jefferson County stand with you during this difficult time.
SCAM ALERT! We’re not calling you.
Scammers are spoofing caller ID to make it look like the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is calling. We’re not.
They are impersonating local law enforcement and claiming you missed jury duty or failed to appear in court. Then they try to scare you into paying immediately to avoid arrest.
Here’s how it typically goes: someone calls claiming they are a deputy. They may say there is a warrant for your arrest because you missed jury duty, ignored a summons, or failed to show up for court. They might offer a way to “resolve it” on the phone if you pay a fine right now.
They might tell you to:
• Send cash
• Deposit money at a Bitcoin ATM
• Buy gift cards and read off the numbers
• Send money through Zelle, Cash App, or Venmo
Even if the caller uses the name of a real deputy, a real phone number appears on caller ID, or they know personal details like your address, it does not mean it is legitimate. Scammers can spoof numbers and pull details from public sources.
Remember this:
• Law enforcement will never call to warn you that you will be arrested or threaten arrest if you hang up
• Law enforcement will never demand payment by cash, gift cards, cryptocurrency, payment apps, or wire transfers to clear a warrant or fix a jury duty issue
If you get a call like this, hang up.
