The Athletic has a very strict code of conduct policy and editorial guidelines that are in lockstep w/ The Times.

Their top priorities are:

•Editorial Independence
•Credibility
•Avoiding conflicts of interest

That includes avoiding even the appearance of a conflict of interest in order to maintain credibility.

These are typically laid out in the employee handbook or in your contract.

I’m highlighting this because too many people are hung up on “the pictures aren’t evidence they slept together” no they don’t show them sleeping together but the pictures show the appearance of a conflict of interest for a journalist.

This is a violation of The Athletics Editorial Guidelines

It’s SOP for The Athletic to sideline a reporter and launch an internal investigation when something like this comes to light.

They need to determine whether or not there is an appearance of bias and if it alters the trust of the public.

It’s critical she is honest during this time as The Athletic is pressing for proof that they were there with a group of 6 as she previously stated.

The investigation will include:
•Coverage of the Patriots
•Time with ESPN/ Titans to determine if there is a pattern of a conflict of interest with Vrabel before she joined The Athletic
•The vetting of Ran Carthon
•Her reporting vs other insiders (this is very interesting to compare)
•The Morgan Moses error

They will look for:
Undisclosed bias, Favoritism in her scoops & post Vrabel firing coverage.

They will need to determine if her professional integrity was compromised by:

•Looking into communication logs
•Establishing a timeline for personal vs professional communication
•Finding out if the “Group of 6” exists
•Figuring out if she disclosed a “close personal relationship” with Vrabel to the editors
•Conducting interviews with witnesses/sources

This will or at least should be an extensive investigation and could take months. Her contract expires in Aug.
