THE FALL OF AN ICON: ZITHABISENI RESORT AND CONFERENCE CENTRE IS NOW A SHADOW OF ITSELF

On the 07th of September 2026, I had the opportunity to visit the iconic Zithabiseni Resort and Conference Centre. I must say, I am extremely sad as a resident of Thembisile Hani Local Municipality.

What used to be an iconic and beautiful conference centre is now a shadow of what it used to be.

The current state of Zithabiseni Resort is extremely bad and heartbreaking. The chalets are not working, others are burned down and dilapidated. The conference centre is no longer working, it is closed. The restaurant is closed. The pools are closed. Only a few people are working there. The place is no longer making money; it is now a liability to the community it was meant to serve.

The provincial government and the national government have failed us, the residents of Zithabiseni Village, known as Boekenhouthoek.

Zithabiseni Resort, meaning "a place of pleasure and tranquility", is a historic jewel located within the 13,300-hectare Mabusa Nature Reserve between Groblersdal and Bronkhorstspruit on the R25 road. Originally established in the late 1960s as Die Bron and later transferred from the former KwaNdebele Government, the 102-hectare resort boasts 56 chalets, conferencing facilities, swimming pools, restaurant and environmental education centre, set against the beautiful bushveld and mountain views.

Zithabiseni Resort used to attract people from across Africa and from outside of South Africa to come and visit this beautiful place.

This was the economic lifeline for local residents. It was the economic spin-off for clubs, shops, taverns, and everyone who was selling food. From September to January each and every year, we knew that it was time to make a lot of money for the locals. The transportation business used to make a killing as Zithabiseni Resort used to host huge and powerful events like Jazz in The Bush and Ziyaphenduka Promotions etc.

Today, that economic ecosystem is dead. Our youth are unemployed, our small businesses are struggling, and our heritage is rotting.

As a Cultural Activist from this village, I am calling on the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA), and National Government to account. This resort is not just bricks and mortar; it is our identity, our economy, and our pride. Its neglect is the neglect of the people of Thembisile Hani Local Municipality.

We demand urgent intervention, transparency on the future of the resort, and a clear rehabilitation plan that includes the community of Zithabiseni Village.

Enough is enough.
