Why totalitarian regimes are always oppressive: They reduce humans to a single dimension. The term for that is reductionism:

The 20th century was the bloodiest century ever—and the carnage was driven by atheist totalitarian ideologies: Nazism and Communism.

What was the reductionism in Nazism? What was the single category it used to define a person’s worth and value? Race.

The Nazis claimed to be Aryans—and if you were the wrong race, if you were Jewish, or Slavic, or Gypsy, you could be herded into ghettos, shipped off in box cars to concentration camps, and thrown into the ovens.

What was the reductionism of communism? What was the single category that determined your value?
Economic class. Capitalist versus proletariat.
If you were the wrong class, you could be put in prison, shipped off in box cars to hard labor camps, and worked to death or shot.

A one-dimensional view of human nature inevitably leads to concentration camps.

Christianity teaches that we are made in God's image, and cannot be reduced to any single dimension.
