Elon Musk reveals why he launched his Tesla Roadster into space.

"I fully expected this flight to fail."

Musk was talking about Falcon Heavy's first flight.

Since he thought the rocket might fail, he didn't want to put something boring on top of it.

Instead, SpaceX launched his personal Tesla Roadster with Starman sitting in the driver's seat.

The car is now traveling in an orbit that takes it between Earth and Mars.

And according to Musk, it could remain up there for around 10 million years.

Imagine taking your everyday car and accidentally turning it into a piece of space history.

For years, millions of people have suspected something was happening behind the curtain.

Posts restricted.

Content removed.

Accounts limited.

Political opinions branded “misinformation.”

Journalists, campaigners and ordinary citizens watching perfectly lawful posts remain online — yet sometimes wondering why their ability to reach an audience appeared to collapse.

And governments across Britain and Europe demanding ever greater powers over what appears online.

But there has always been one enormous problem:

THE PUBLIC COULDN’T SEE WHO WAS PULLING THE STRINGS.

That may be about to change.

Elon Musk has now said:

“Any censorship required by governments is now clearly visible.”

If X's transparency measures expose government demands for censorship and identify the authorities and legal mechanisms involved, this could be extraordinarily significant.

Because suddenly the question isn't simply:

WAS SOMETHING CENSORED?

It becomes:

WHO ASKED FOR IT?

Which government?

Which regulator?

Which agency?

What content was targeted?

What justification was given?

And how extensive was it?

But there is another question that could prove even more important.

“FREEDOM OF SPEECH, NOT FREEDOM OF REACH.”

That is terminology X itself has used to describe its enforcement philosophy.

And the distinction matters.

A platform doesn't necessarily have to delete your words to dramatically reduce their impact.

A post can remain online while its visibility is restricted.

You can still speak.

You can still point to the post and say:

“Look — it hasn't been censored.”

But what if hardly anybody is allowed to hear you?

That raises a question I believe deserves an answer:

HAVE GOVERNMENTS OR REGULATORS EVER REQUESTED — DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY — THAT THE REACH OF LAWFUL CONTENT BE RESTRICTED?

And if they have:

WILL X NOW SHOW US?

Because transparency shouldn't merely tell us about posts governments wanted deleted.

We should know whether authorities sought other forms of intervention too.

Removal.

Restriction.

Visibility.

Reach.

And then comes perhaps the biggest question of all:

DOES THE TRAIL GO BACKWARDS?

If historical government requests eventually become accessible, imagine what journalists could investigate.

Creators who watched their reach suddenly collapse.

Journalists whose investigations struggled to reach their audiences.

Campaigners who believed their content was being suppressed.

People who were told controversial opinions constituted “misinformation.”

Could some eventually discover that government authorities had sought action against particular content?

WE DON'T YET KNOW.

And that distinction is important.

There is currently no basis for claiming that every unexplained fall in reach was caused by government intervention.

Algorithms change.

Platform policies change.

Enforcement happens for many different reasons.

But that's precisely why transparency matters.

LET US SEE THE EVIDENCE.

If governments acted lawfully and proportionately, the records should demonstrate that.

But if government departments, regulators or state agencies pressured platforms to restrict lawful political speech, dissent or inconvenient journalism, the public deserves to know that too.

And Britain and Europe could have some particularly serious questions to answer if such evidence emerges.

For years governments have demanded greater transparency from social-media companies.

Perhaps it's time citizens received the same transparency from their governments.

Tell us:

WHO MADE THE REQUEST?

WHAT CONTENT DID THEY TARGET?

DID THEY ASK FOR REMOVAL — OR RESTRICTION?

DID THEY SEEK TO AFFECT ITS REACH?

WHAT LEGAL AUTHORITY DID THEY USE?

AND HOW FAR BACK DO THE RECORDS GO?

Because in the digital age, freedom of expression isn't only about whether you are technically permitted to speak.

It is also about understanding who has the power to decide whether anybody hears you.

If X is genuinely about to shine a light into that system, then open it completely.

OPEN THE FILES.

SHOW US WHO ASKED.

SHOW US WHAT THEY WANTED.

AND LET THE PUBLIC JUDGE FOR THEMSELVES. @elonmusk
