I think this has genuinely left me speechless because you’re seeing the shift in real time. So many of our mothers, aunts, sisters and even grandmothers are consuming alcohol now when it wasn’t the case 20 years ago. Everything she said is factually true. Many black families always had a drunkard uncle or father but now there’s a drunkard aunt or mother as well.

You’d rarely see an alcohol brand using women as the primary focus of their marketing back in the day but over the years they’ve slowly incorporated them in their branding. Now we have entire beverages specifically targeted at women (Brutal Fruit, Ice Tropez, BNG, etc.). It’s also not a coincidence that black women are the primary focus. We live in a rainbow nation right? How come you don’t see many white, Indian or coloured women at the forefront of the marketing?

The black woman was the last line of defence in the black household and the white man has finally got his grip on her.

This is true. Two weeks back I was stopped in Sandton and I asked the traffic cop why is he stopping me? He literally said "You ladies with these fancy cars are always drunk. You see the lady behind you that we stopped? She is drunk" the time was around 12:30pm🫠
