His Dad Justin Tatum & Mother were both 19yrs old when they had him. They were kids themselves. But his father was in fact IN HIS LIFE.

He also stated he experienced an intense "tough love" upbringing where his father served as his primary basketball coach and trainer.

Jayson has shared that his interactions with his father revolved entirely around games, practices, and trips to the barbershop rather than traditional childhood outings like fishing or amusement parks.

As an adult, Jayson gained perspective, realizing his father was navigating his own youth & parenting without a blueprint. Jayson credits that relentless pressure and discipline as the driving force to his NBA Success.

They remain close today, with Jayson actively supporting Justin's professional coaching career (who serves as a head coach in Australia's NBL).

All I got from this, was his father was NOT soft on him and seen his potential earlier than everyone else. He wasted no time & developed him to be the basketball player he is today. Dope if you ask me 🔥👏

Tatum’s Dad:

“I’ve seen it when it started with the Draft, Mom got interviewed, and I was sitting right next to it, nothing was asked to me, we know what it took to get our kids there. If stuff like that is going to break me, then I don’t need to be around.”
