I have witnessed three hair pulls on #Cucurella, all of which went to VAR. The first one, Mike Dean, admitted he wanted to save his mate Anthony Taylor by not calling it out. For the second, the referee reviewed with VAR but decided not to send a player off. PGMOL’s so-called top referee, Anthony Taylor, did not even give a foul when Romero pulled Cucurella’s hair. VAR checked the incident and still chose not to punish it.

No penalty, no red card, no ban.

Yet when Martínez made contact with Calvert-Lewin’s hair, it resulted in a red card and a three-match ban.

If the on-field referee had initially given it as a foul and a red card, the decision could at least be understood.

But VAR recommending a review in one case and not the other is where the inconsistency becomes glaring.
