Australia has announced a temporary cut to fuel taxes after leaders agreed on measures to manage rising petrol costs and supply concerns.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government would halve the fuel excise, reducing prices by around 26 cents per litre for motorists. The move follows a meeting of federal and state leaders on Monday to address what officials described as growing pressure on fuel supply and costs.

The reduction will remain in place for three months, with authorities also encouraging Australians to use public transport where possible to reduce fuel demand.

Leaders also agreed to suspend the heavy vehicle road user charge for three months, a measure aimed at supporting truck drivers and maintaining supply chains.

Mr Albanese said the steps were designed to ease cost-of-living pressures and ensure fuel availability during a period of global uncertainty.

Australia, like many countries, has been facing rising fuel prices amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global energy supplies.

Fuel prices increased in Sri Lanka

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has revised fuel prices with effect from midnight today (9).

Accordingly, the price of a litre of Octane 92 petrol has been increased by Rs. 24 to Rs. 317, while Octane 95 petrol has been raised by Rs. 25 to Rs. 365.

The price of Auto Diesel has been increased by Rs. 22 to Rs. 303, while Super Diesel has been increased by Rs. 24 to Rs. 353.

Meanwhile, the price of kerosene has been increased by Rs. 13 to Rs. 195 per litre.
