55% ROI on the horses in February.😮💨
Not gonna lie it feels good but it’s not because I suddenly got better at picking winners.
Here are the top 6 things that actually got me the top 0.01%👇
1️⃣Stopped staking the same on everything
Back in the day I used to risk the same amount on a 6/4 as I would on a 10/1. Makes no sense. A 6/4 has a way higher chance of landing so it should take more of my bank. A 10/1 is riskier so the stake needs to be smaller even though the return looks better.
2️⃣Killed the autopilot each way habit
Had this rule — anything over 5/1 I’d just go each way without thinking. Now I break it down properly. What’s the win part worth? What’s the place part worth given the field? Big competitive field with a 15/1 shot? Place is rubbish value. Smaller field with a donkey? That place suddenly looks very different.
3️⃣Cut out the emotional bets
If I fancied a horse for reasons that weren’t about value — just liked it, backed it before, sentimental — I’ve stopped. Feelings don’t pay the bills.
4️⃣Stopped forcing bets just to have action
Some days there’s 4 proper setups. Some days there’s nothing. I used to feel like I had to bet something. Now if there’s nothing I don’t bet. Hardest habit to break but probably the most important.
5️⃣Actually started tracking properly
Every bet goes in the spreadsheet. Win or lose. Then once a week I look at where the money’s actually going. You’d be surprised how much leaks out in places you don’t notice until you track it. (I also have now hired a data analyst to help me optimise).
6️⃣Started watching replays and truly understand context.
Just backing value off the form book isn’t enough. Was it bad luck in running? Terrible trip? Ground not suiting? That context is the difference between a losing bet and learning something for next time.
None of this is sexy or exciting.
But doing these things consistently
when it’s is what separates 55% months from break even ones.
