3 June 1098 – The Fall of Antioch

After an eight-month siege marked by hunger, disease and constant attacks, the Crusaders finally broke into the great city of Antioch on 3 June 1098. One of the strongest cities in the Christian East had been retaken after centuries under Muslim rule.

Around 700 Crusaders took part in the daring night assault that gained entry to the city. Fighting thousands of miles from home, deep in enemy territory and weakened by months of hardship, they scaled the walls under cover of darkness, opened the gates, and helped secure one of the most remarkable victories of the First Crusade.

The defenders still held the inner citadel, and a large Muslim relief army soon arrived, trapping the Crusaders inside the very city they had just captured. Against the odds, they held their ground, secured Antioch, and continued their march towards Jerusalem.
