Professor of Psychiatry & Beh Sciences @StanfordMed decreasing stigma/increasing evidence/improving care. Food tweets. Digital Ed @BMJMentalHealth Opinions mine
Just had a patient tell me today that my prescribing acamprosate saved his life. Hasn't drank since. "I just don't think about it anymore." Never had someone taking gabapentin tell me that, so just a reminder to all of you out there to follow the data and to watch your biases.😀
@TamarHaspel The link just made me want a Twinkie! Food prices must be a driver of obesity in some way. I can’t understand how they couldn’t be and subsidies contribute to lower prices. I have some reading to do.
@RCarhartHarris What they wrote about MDMA was just fine. I hope they are just as observant this time. The “we can’t blind, just accept our blinded studies anyway” line verges on religious belief. Or belief in profits, but maybe the same thing. Marketing and religion share some things in common.
@BadreNicolas Only after better treatments arrived did older treatments seem barbaric. It’s very different from criticism that asks us to dissolve as a profession. Critical psychiatry (whatever that is, it’s a lot of things) deserves to be engaged with but some critics not so much.
@Josh__Hardman They were so critical of an MDMA company that the company had to be bought and renamed. Investors are resilient in this space because the possibility of huge profits drive them.
Kratom-derived products are everywhere and they’re not safe. We are seeing more people with addiction to these than ever before. Great interview with @KeithNHumphreys
Spoke with @nbcbayarea about MGM-15, a new semi-synthetic opioid that is sold in gas stations, convenience stories, and smoke shops.

@MaxJordan_N@serotavirus Yes, getting biological measures in addition to self-report. It’s still a good idea to do a trial like this, but we will see about unblinding.
@MaxJordan_N@serotavirus We are doing a large (>600 participant) placebo-controlled trial of semaglutide for mod to severe AUD. A real trial, we’ll see how it goes. It’s not a study of craving. The outcome is drop in 2 WHO risk levels for drinking. A high bar.
@MaxJordan_N@serotavirus The bad thing about the trial is that it is not placebo-controlled, as I’ve written before. CASPR and Reville have been pushing GLP-1s ahead of the evidence and this is another study trying to do that. These people are already justice involved, that isn’t the issue for me.
