Nice job, @mcgillu! It's nice to see my alma mater not marginalizing the communities of rapists and murderers. I should add that the term "rapist" is mean; always better to use "Undocumented Love Maker" or "Altruistic Surprise Sperm Donor." Rapists have feelings too. I'm sure that my intellectual mentor, Wood Cricket @jessicatarlov agrees with me.

Why, it's as if someone said, "Hey, how can I make something worse than Chicago Deep Dish?"

“Women talk a lot about how scared of male violence they are, but from their behavior it's clear they never actually consider it a possibility”

When I was eighteen I was out for the night with my bf and some friends, we were barhopping in Kings Cross. I was tipsy & occasionally lippy & obnoxious towards strangers (who were asking for it!).

My bf quietly & discreetly at one point during the night said “babe, I love you, but fuck sometimes I worry that you’re writing cheques I won’t be able to cash, if it comes to and I’m on my own”. I was like “wtf are you talking about?”

He literally had to explain to me that if I was being a fuckwit starting trouble, he’d obviously have to defend me if anything went down, and if I’m being a massive smart ass and it’s just like him & me & my best girlfriend, then he’s going to be in a fight on his own. All because I was being an antagonistic smart ass to some strangers who couldn’t take a joke.

The idea that I needed to be able to back up my words with violence if it came to it, was something that had literally never occurred to me. Ever.

It was a total revelation. Suddenly i realised talk wasn’t “cheap” in this context, it was expensive. The idea that I could effectively get him beaten up, or put him in real danger, by being a precocious little shit arguing with idiots because I could, was horrifying.

From then on I was extremely reluctant to ever argue with strangers or act like a smart ass unnecessarily, because I was suddenly keenly aware that the guys we were with could potentially be expected to pay with their lives for any poorly received flippant comments we made.

It really was totally novel to me. This isn’t how women see the world, at all.

It’s weird that the people who excoriate Elon Musk for not spending a couple billion to end world hunger never ask Harvard to liquidate its $2.2 billion stake in SpaceX to do the same.

The future of the Right is neither unfiltered MAGA nor George W Bush conservatism. Neither side wants to hear that and believes that they’ll somehow defeat and excise the sect of the GOP that’s the problem - you both are!

The future of the GOP looks more like Rubio & DeSantis than Vance or Pence. The more you pull towards the later two, the more the Democrats will eat our lunch and make impossible for another GOP led government.

You saw this with the "Black owned business" stickers in 2020. If there are some ethnic or religious groups you won't smash, then your riot is a pogrom against the groups you will smash.

We've had satellite telecommunications for many decades now. What makes Starlink so unique is that it's a Low Earth Orbit constellation, which drastically lowers latency and improves bandwidth; two things that usually make satellite connections sub-par compared to almost any other option. But to get global coverage at such low altitude you need a massive constellation of thousands of birds - which is why SpaceX was the first to build one, as their launch costs are lower by an order of magnitude due to having reusable rockets.

To make any kind of competitor to Starlink/Starshield, you'll need a re-usable rocket of your own, or to pay SpaceX to launch them - and they may well decline to orbit the birds of a competitor.

This is a unique capability that only the United States has ownership of. The idea that anyone can just "replace" Starlink is born of profound stupidity.
